Our Cakes Throughout the Years: Valentine's Day Cake and Cupcakes

I realized that I had never made a Valentine's Day cake before (I'm not into the holiday at all). I had a burst of inspiration the other day to combine apricot and rose flavoring together, so I decide that I might as well try out a new recipe and bang out a Valentine's Day cake as well.

The cake and cupcakes are a blueberry applesauce and ginger cake with an apricot and rose flavored frosting. The flavors went incredibly well together! Quite possibly a new favorite of mine!

As far as the decorations, I piped a simple design on some of the cupcakes and added a white chocolate heart on top. I also made a few flower designs on others. I piped a ruffle pattern on the sides of the actual cake, with a flower pattern on top. Voila! A Valentine's Day cake. Done. :)

Our Cakes Throughout the Years: Birthday Cake

This was a cake I made for a nun's birthday. Being the good Catholic girl that I am, I wanted to make the nun and the big man upstairs happy. LOL

The cake is a yellow cake with apricot jam filling, and coconut buttercream frosting. The nun's favorite color is lavender, so I added lavender-colored ruffles on the sides of the cake, and a lavender-colored flower on top. I also sprinkled chopped coconut around on the inside border of the cake.

Our Cakes Throughout the Years: Pre-School Celebration Cake

I wanted to make a special cake for my son's pre-school. It was their last day of school, and I wanted to give the students and teachers a little treat. It is a marble cake with buttercream frosting. The flowers, banner, and birds are made out of fondant. I used an edible black marker to write with.

Our Cakes Throughout the Years: Mother's Day Cake

I am the proud mom of an almost 3-year old boy, and decided to make a cake to celebrate Mother's Day. I hosted a BBQ for our parents and had some rosemary-thyme smoked pork ribs off of our own BBQ smoker (we're actually BBQ competitors and card carrying members of the Kansas City Barbeque Society).

The dessert I made was the cake shown above. It is a Guinness and Chocolate cake with a strawberry-rosewater coulis filling and also a vanilla sea salt frosting. The cake is covered in dark chocolate fondant and I piped the flower (I got inspired by a new flower which was planted in my garden) and scrolls with buttercream.
